Foundation of Mathematics & PreCalculus 10: Course Outline Mrs. Sali/Mrs. Drebit Semester#1 Sept 2021-Jan 2022 Semester#2 Feb-June 2022
This course is designed to build on the mathematic skills you acquired in Math 9, as well as work on your ability to reason, estimate, communicate, and reflect. The five BIG IDEAS that will be focused on are:
Proportional comparisons can be made among right triangles using trigonometry.
The meaning of each operation, including powers, extends to algebraic expressions.
Rate of change is an essential attribute of linear relations, and has meaning in the different representations, including equations. There is relationship between linear equations, graphs, and solving systems algebraically.
Operations between polynomial expressions are connected and allow us to make meaning through abstract thinking.
Exponents and radicals allow us to model and solve real life problems.
Assessment: Students will be assessed based on a set of standards for the curriculum. Evidence of your learning will be gathered through a variety of ways:
Observations through classroom participation, group discussion, one-on-one interactions, completion of assigned work, and ability to keep up with concepts presented in lessons.
Self-assessments
Assignments, lesson assessments
Quizzes and Unit Tests
Midterm & Final Examinations
Assessment for parts I, II, and III will usually be done on a 6-point scale:
Mark Calculation Assignment, lesson assessments 20% Quizzes and tests 50% Midterm Exam 10% Final Exam 20%
Numeracy Exam As part of the new graduation requirements, students will be required to write a numeracy exam in June 2021. More information will be provided to the students throughout the semester. Some classes will be reserved for math drills and preparation for this exam.
What to expect and what’s expected of you:
Generals Expectations: It is expected that you follow all school policies while in this classroom. Namely, strive for a “G” in work ethic and all will be well! Here’s a refresher of what a “G” student does:
You arrive to class on time and you are prepared.*
You are respectful to your peers, school staff, and the classroom environment.
All of your assignments are completed on time and to the best of your ability.
You are attentive and focused in class; You have a positive attitude.
You participate in activities and discussions. You work well individually and in group settings.
Scientific Calculator (NOT permitted in some of the first units where mental math is being developed)
**Classroom procedures:
When the bell rings: be in your desk, be quiet and ready to work.
After attendance, we will pray together; please be reverent.
At the end of the class: the bell does not dismiss you, the teacher dismisses you.
Remain in the classroom for the duration of class; if you have to leave the classroom during class time to go to the bathroom, etc., ask before leaving.
Bring water bottles to class; you should not need to leave class to get a drink.
Hand-in assignments in the box labeled “FOM 10”.
Homework assignments will be written on the white board. Refer to it for the day’s assignment and also for any work you have missed throughout the unit of study.
Food is allowed in class as long as it’s not messy, stinky, noisy, or unhealthy! Please clean up after yourself and throw any food garbage away in the hall garbage cans (not the classroom one!). NO GUM….LIKE EVER! (So gross when stuck under all the desks!!)
Do not bring your cell phone to this class ... leave it in your bag or preferably in your locker. Cell phones are NOT permitted to be used for calculators. If you have it out in class, we will take it away but we really don’t want to be the phone police…. Just don’t bring it… Just come here to do math.
This classroom is a NO GUM & NO PHONE ZONE. Math and Jesus is all we need!
Missed Classes: When you return from an absence, it is yourresponsibility to catch up on missed lessons and work. Start by asking a reliable student in class what was missed BEFORE your first class back. Then see your teacher for missed hand-outs, etc. Better yet, check this website and do the work WHILE YOU ARE AWAY. Catch up ASAP so you do not fall further behind (This course moves quickly!). Students may make up missed assessments, quizzes, and tests by arranging alternative times to complete them with the teacher. When you know you will be away for class, please make arrangements before you leave.
