Immaculata Regional High School Math 9 2020/2021 Mrs. Sali/Mrs. Drebit “Do not worry about your difficulties in Mathematics. I can assure you mine are still greater.” - Albert Einstein
Welcome to an awesome year in Math 9! We are thrilled to be here, excited to get to know you better, and filled with hope that we will learn much together.
During September and October Mrs. Sali will be teaching this course. Beginning November 1st, Mrs. Drebit and Mrs. Sali will be job sharing so we will both be your teachers and we will be working “doubly” hard to make this course great for you! Mrs. Sali will work Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesday mornings, while Mrs. Drebit will work Wednesday afternoons, Thursdays, and Fridays.
Please bring your textbook, notebook (Yes filled with paper), pencil (real mathematicians don’t do math in pen), and calculator. You are not permitted to use your phone as a calculator. DO NOT BRING YOUR PHONE TO CLASS…leave it in your bag, or preferably, in your locker. If you have your phone out in class, we will take it away but we really don’t want to be the phone police…so just don’t bring it…just do math.
Gum stuck all over the under side of the desks is really gross! This classroom is NO GUM & NO PHONE ZONE.
You are expected to follow the rules outlined in school policy (see on line student handbook) regarding behavior, cell phone use, dress code and all other school rules. In addition, specific teachers may have certain rules for their unique classrooms/subject areas. There is really one specific rule, that covers everything, for this class…
RESPECT
ABSENCES: All work missed due to excused absence must be made up. It is your responsibility to find out what you missed (check my website... it's all there! www.rhondasali.weebly.com) and hand in missing work accordingly. For something to be excused entirely, we must have a note from home explaining your absence.
HOMEWORK: You WILL have regular homework in this class. Your brain learns math best with regular practice and repetition….this is not old fashioned thinking, it is just how your brain works. If you RESPECT our class time, you should have ample opportunity to complete much work at school but do expect homework also. Plan to do 15-30 minutes of math homework after each class (this is an estimate….some of you may have less, some may have more).
Athletes exercise their bodies….Mathletes exercise their brains. “Young people of every continent, do not be afraid to be the saints of the new millennium.” - St. John Paul II the Great
LATES: We will generally start every class with a short assessment (quiz based on previous day’s lesson or homework) so it is important to be on time. If you come to class prepared, actively participate in the daily learning, do your homework regularly, and arrive on time, these will be easily attainable marks and you will be well on your way to achieving great results in this course!
TESTS: We will have frequent tests (We believe in lots of chances to succeed!)…some smaller tests along the way as well as major chapters tests. If you miss a test you must arrange a make-up time with one of us immediately upon your return (or preferably before your absence) so that your classmates don’t have to wait longer to get their marked tests back). We will always have a chapter review and/or a “pre-test” before a major test. Therefore, it will never be necessary to have test re-writes.
MISSING WORK: It is your responsibility to check you marks regularly on Aspen (so know how to use your account). You should always know your current mark in this course as the information will be readily available to you. If you are unsure and need us to check, please do so on your own time and NOT during class time.
If you want to make up missed/poorly done work that has already been marked and handed back, then you will need to do so in the classroom during lunch or after school under our supervision. Spoiler alert….we know that it is easy to copy work and we also know that this will not help you learn. We want to help you learn!
EXTRA HELP: We will often be in the school during lunch hour and/or after school briefly until 3:30pm (oh COVID). Even though our schedule is a little odd, you are a priority and we will always make time for you! Find us in Room 13 or email [email protected] and/or [email protected] and we can arrange a time together. Also we are available during via Zoom during COVID.
COURSE ASSESSMENT 35% Lesson Assessments (including daily quizzes & assignments) 40% Tests (including both smaller mid-unit and larger chapter unit tests) 12.5% Midterm January 2021 12.5% Final Exam June 2021
If you ever have questions or concerns regarding any of the above, door 13 is always open (well you might have to knock sometimes). We encourage you to come and talk to either of us anytime.
Please frequently check Mrs. Sali’s website https://rhondasali.weebly.com/ and our google classroom for all current information.
MATH IS FUN…So let’s learn much and have some fun together too!
